Luke 23:33-34

When they came to the place called The Skull, there they crucified him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left. But Jesus was saying, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.”

There is no better example of the grace and forgiveness of God than when his Son, Jesus, was being nailed to a cross. At that moment Jesus could have responded to the hatred and anger of the men who put him there by calling down a million angels to kill them all. He could have merely blinked his eyes and everyone would be dead, a fitting punishment for what they were doing to Him. But He didn’t. He responded to this anger with what I think is one of the most beautiful moments in Scripture; He said, “Father, forgive them.”

This is the definition of crazy. They didn’t deserve one iota of forgiveness, but that is exactly what Jesus gave them. The same is true in our lives. We sin against God time and time again, we get angry at him for nothing, we turn our backs on him, yet he responds with forgiveness. No matter how many times you sin or turn away from Him He will always be there waiting for you with open arms.

This isn’t a free pass to go on sinning because, “it’s fine, God will forgive me.” If you truly love God and desire to do his will, then a life of sin will be the farthest thing from your mind. And if you think you are too far gone and have done one too many bad things, don’t worry; there is more than enough forgiveness for you. Give your life of sin and anger to God. He will forgive you and make you clean.

QUESTION 1. Do you think you are too far gone for God to forgive you? If God forgave the men who nailed Jesus to a cross, don’t you think he can forgive you just as easily?
QUESTION 2. Have you confessed your sin to God? If not, now is as good a time as any.
CHALLENGE: Lay your sins and your past down at the foot of the cross and accept the forgiveness Jesus so willingly offers.
