John 10:10

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

When I was younger I had the hardest time living in the moment. Even if I was doing something fun with friends, like hanging out at Chuck E. Cheese, I would be thinking about the next fun thing I could do. As I got older this problem stayed with me. If I was out to dinner with a pretty girl I would be thinking about our next date, even though I wasn’t even guaranteed another. I never lived in the moment and I was never fully present. It was an awful way to “enjoy” the life God had blessed me with.

Jesus tells us in the Book of John that he came so we can have a full life. He didn’t say He came so we can have a full life tomorrow, later on, or next year; He meant now. This minute. How much are we missing out on when we neglect the blessings God has put in front of us today? When we look so much to the future we definitely aren’t able to love the people in front of us well, nor do we get to appreciate the small, beautiful moments. And the thing is, we aren’t even promised tomorrow! God says he will care for us and give us all we need for today. Tomorrow will take care of itself.

Thankfully, God took my heart of discontent and made it a heart that was present and able to enjoy every moment and person I was with. This was not an easy place to get to and it took me surrendering this issue completely to God, which I didn’t want to do. Looking and planning for the future feels safe because it gives you the illusion of control. If you struggle with this, give it over to God. Slow down and take in the beauty of the present. Put your phone away when you are with others. Be present. Living life to the fullest isn’t in some unattainable later date; it’s in the here and now.

QUESTION 1. Do you have a problem staying present? Is it hard to focus on the person across from you without thinking about what you are doing tomorrow?
QUESTION 2. What are some things you can put into practice to better enjoy the blessings God has given you today?
CHALLENGE: Tomorrow when you wake up, ask God to help you stay present in every moment of your day. Then do it again the next morning and the next. Look at what you can discover today that is beautiful, the new experiences, the people, so you can live life to the fullest right now.
