COMMITMENT

STEPHANIE DANIELS

Joshua 1:9

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Has God ever called upon you to do something that you felt ill prepared to do? When God calls upon us to do something that appears to be difficult, simply put, it can be very discouraging. When difficulty happens we tend to act in one of three ways: first, we tend to act like Mosses and argue with God. We tell God that we don’t have the skillset to accomplish his call (Exodus 4:10). Second, we tend to act like the prophet Jonah who upon hearing God’s call for his life tries to run away from God (Jonah 1:1-12). Third, we stop trusting God and we begin trusting in our own power, much like Abraham did when he decided to have a child with his maidservant, Hagar (Genesis 16).

The thing is, in each one of these cases God provided the means and the strength to fulfill his call upon their lives. Take for example Moses, he doubted his abilities, so God gave him a helper to speak on his behalf. Regarding Jonah, no matter how much he ran from God, God still pursued him and he ended up convincing a whole empire to repent and turn to God. Finally, with Abraham, even though he chose to not trust God, once he realized his sin and repented of it, God blessed him and gave he and his true wife a son. When God calls you to a certain task, no matter how hard it is, don’t be discouraged; don’t argue, run away, or take matters into your own hands, but be committed to God’s call. Remember God’s promise to be your strength and your power to fulfill any task he calls you to (Joshua 1:9).

QUESTION 1. Have you ever found it difficult to stay committed to the call God has placed on your life? (Explain)
QUESTION 2. Have you ever felt like any of the Bible characters discussed above? (If so, which ones and why?)
CHALLENGE: We challenge you to not get discouraged in your calling, but rather be strong, courageous and know that God will be with you wherever you go.
