Lamentations 3:32-33

Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love. For he does not willingly bring affliction or grief to anyone.

How often do we encounter a hardship or witness a disaster and blame God for it? He is God isn’t he? He could’ve stopped the wave from crashing into that town or stopped the cancer from spreading, couldn’t he? Think about this though: God is the ruler and creator of all, who has always been and always will be. You are the created, whose life is but a vapor, who knows nothing of the future or past. We are not God so why do we feel like God owes us an explanation when something bad happens? He knows all the mysteries and knowledge of the universe and yet we think that we know better?

The Bible tells us that God does not willingly bring affliction or grief to anyone. Remember, God created a perfect world and our pain now is a result of the fallen and sinful world. We are the ones who botched it up and we continually botch up His perfect creation every day. But the good news is that the Bible also promises that God will show compassion and love to us in our suffering. His love is unfailing. So next time you encounter or witness suffering, instead of shaking your fist at God who knows infinitely more than you, decide to put your faith and trust in the one whose love will never fail. Not ever.

QUESTION 1. When suffering happens what is your normal response? Do you turn to the only one who can bring you out of it or do you distance yourself and get angry at God?
QUESTION 2. Do you believe that God has your best interest in mind when hardships come? Do you truly believe that He will bring you through, whether you like the outcome or not?
CHALLENGE: Next time you go through something hard, trust that God will show you compassion and love just as he has promised.
