Psalm 34:18-19

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all;

Everything is going great for you. You, your family and friends all have good health; you’re working a high paying job; school isn’t too hard. You seem to be coasting happily through life. But then the unthinkable happens; your best friend dies in a car accident, your parents get divorced, or you lose your job. A whole new world of brokenness opens up before you. What do you do?

The decision of how to handle pain and suffering is a huge one. None of us can control what we face in this life, only how we choose to handle it. Do you turn to medications or alcohol to numb the pain? Do you spiral into deep depression and barely leave your bed? Or do you throw yourself into the waiting arms of God and lean on him through it all? The Bible tells us that God is near to us in our deepest pain and that he saves us from it. He wants those of us who are weary and burdened to come to Him because only He can give us true rest (Matt. 11:28). Yes, the trials we face in this life can be awful, and it’s okay to be sad, but make sure it’s God you’re turning to and he will give you the strength to make it through to the other side.

QUESTION 1. How do you handle trials? Really think through this and be honest with yourself.
QUESTION 2. How often do you actually find your hope and rest in God? How do you feel when you do?
CHALLENGE: Next time you face pain or suffering, turn away from the temporary fixes of this world and choose God instead.
