Matthew 5:13-14

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.”

For most of my high school and early college life I would go to church on Sunday, youth group on Sunday night, and act like the best little Christian who ever did live. Come Monday I would be right back living my other life ignoring God, ignoring the cries of the helpless and rejecting living as Jesus did. It was a horrible double life. Unfortunately, this is how many of us live.

If we want to be effective witnesses for Jesus in this dark world then we need to live in the light. We can’t say we are followers of Jesus one minute and curse his children the next. When people see us treating others badly, our preaching of Jesus will fall on deaf ears. They will call us hypocrites and it will do more damage than good.

You are the salt and light of this earth. As the verse in Matthew later says, “Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.” Don’t hide your light. This world is in desperate need of the truth and light of Jesus and it is our job to show the world who Jesus is. Be the same person Sunday as you are Monday through Saturday so your light can shine before men (Matt. 5:16)

QUESTION 1. Do you live the same Monday through Saturday as you do on Sunday? If not, stop living the double life; it hinders your testimony.
QUESTION 2. Have friends ever been shocked to find out you are a Christian because of the way you conduct yourself around them?
CHALLENGE: Be the salt and light of Jesus each and every day, no matter how unpopular it may be.
