Romans 8:31

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us?

I heard this interview with magician and atheist Penn Jillette many years ago and I haven’t been able to get it out of my head. In it he said, “How much do you have to hate somebody to believe everlasting life is possible and not tell them about it?” There’s a sucker punch to the gut for you.

Why is it that, as Christians, we find it so hard to share the good news with others? That’s what we are here to do! Yet we get scared that people won’t accept us or that they’ll make fun of or persecute us. Well guess what? Jesus said that just as the world hated him it would hate us as well. He said that we will be persecuted, but he also said that through all of it He would be with us and He would overcome the world.

Penn makes a heart-wrenching point. If we believe that the gospel is the greatest, most true, most beautiful news of all time, then how can we possibly keep it to ourselves? How selfish and unloving of us! We must walk with courage and love knowing that God is for us as we tell others about the saving grace of Jesus and the everlasting life found in him.

QUESTION 1. Are you trying to face trials on your own? What was your most recent trial and how did you go about handling it?
QUESTION 2. Do you believe that God can really take care of you in your trials? Pray, talk with Him about your concerns.
CHALLENGE: Next time a trial of any kind comes your way, don’t try to rely on our own strength. You will fail. Give it to God, rely on his strength and be joyful knowing that he will see you through.
