Genesis 16:13

She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.”

When we are in our darkest moments it is hard to believe God is there with us. It is hard to believe anyone is there with us at all. It is the loneliest of places. But here is the good news, even when you feel like no one else understands, notices or sees you, God does.

In Genesis, there is a woman named Hagar who is at her wits end. But just as the darkness seems to overtake her, dawn breaks. She encounters God. It is at that moment that she names God, El Roi, which means, “The God who sees me” It is a beautiful moment for her and a beautiful reminder for us.

When nothing seems to be going right, when no one else understands, remember El Roi. He sees me and he knows me. You don’t have to tell Him why you are upset or sad; He already knows your situation better than you do and He knows you better than you do. Just sit in His presence and let it out, and then take comfort in knowing that El Roi is right there with you.
