Hebrews 5:12-14

For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant. But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.

We are creatures of comfort and convenience. If there is a way in which to be more comfortable then we do it. We even have queen and king beds that allow you to change how soft or hard it is on your side; we don’t even have to agree on the same kind of mattress anymore! We avoid social situations where we might not know many people because we fear the awkward interactions with someone new because heaven forbid if there is a silent lull in conversation. The pursuit of comfort can end up ruling our lives where we sprint away from anything that might bring even an ounce of discomfort.

The thing about comfort is that the more you pursue it the farther you can be pulled from what God has for your life. When you allow God to push you out of your comfort zone you will experience growth and maturity like you haven’t experienced before. And no, there is nothing wrong with being comfortable but it does become an issue when you pursue your comfort more than God and stay only within your little bubble of safety. There is no trust, no stepping out in faith, no adventure, and very little life within that comfort bubble. Step outside of it though and you’ll notice that life will get a little harder, a little grittier, and a little more uncomfortable but you’ll also experience God’s provision and guidance in a whole new and exciting way.

QUESTION 1. What comforts do you pursue? If you start making a list of everything around you that brings comfort (including friends, nice clothes, a cushy job, a warm bed) you’ll be surprised at how exhaustive the list becomes.
QUESTION 2. What stops you from stepping out of your comfort zone? Do you believe that if you do step out that God will always be there to guide and provide?
CHALLENGE: Let go of your security and comfort this week and see how much you grow how much more exciting life becomes.
