Ephesians 5:1-2

Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

I love spending time with little kids and asking them what they want to be when they grow up. I have heard kids say everything from a doctor to a horse. In the mind of a child, there is nothing impossible for them to become. As a kid, there was so much I wanted to be when I grew up.

As I got older, my perspective started to shift from asking “what do I want to be?” I began asking instead the question, “who do I want to be?” I realized that there was a lot I could strive to do, but if I was not being a person of upright character then everything I did was meaningless. So I started to figure out who it was that I wanted to be.

When you are aiming to go into a specific career, you learn from people who have gone before you and who are doing what you want to do. When you are aiming to be a person of certain character, you learn from people who are living that out. We, as humans, learn by seeing what is modeled for us.

There are some people in my life who follow Jesus with such beautiful faith and trust, some who love people so sacrificially and live generously, some who walk with humility and grace, and some who pray with power and walk with God so intimately. All of these people become models for me. Paul urged the Church in Corinth to follow him as he followed Christ. Jesus sets an example for us throughout our lives and we need to use him as our ultimate guide. However, we can also follow the example of those around us who are walking in the footsteps of Jesus.

QUESTION 1. Who stands out in your life to be a person of godly character? Why?
QUESTION 2. What qualities would others possess if they were modeling their life after the way you live your life?
CHALLENGE: Walk in the footsteps of Jesus and you will find others on the same path that you can also learn from.
