Philippians 3:8

More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ.

For many of us, the opinion of others means everything. If it’s the popular thing to do, we do it. If it’s the unpopular thing to do, like being a Christian, we downplay it or don’t talk about it. We find our identity in the opinions of others but it ends up making us die inside, and then we don’t even know who we are anymore.

But God does. He knows you better than your boyfriend or girlfriend or parents. In His eyes you are the most wonderful and perfect creation. Paul tells us in Philippians that he considers all the gains, all the fame, and all the money in the world to be complete garbage compared to knowing Jesus. There is nothing that can compete with knowing Jesus and him knowing you.

So what is it that is defining you? Is it a certain group of friends? Your social status? Whatever it is that you find your identity in, if it isn’t Jesus, get rid of it. Ask God how to detach yourself from that view of yourself so that you’ll be able to see yourself as he sees you, wonderful and complete.

QUESTION 1. Where do you get your identity from?
QUESTION 2. How do you see yourself? How does God see you?
CHALLENGE: Detach yourself from the people and things that are wrongly defining you and then bask in the wonderful identity that God has given you.
