1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

Have you ever felt that you’ve disappointed God, or feared that he could never love you again after all the bad choices you’ve made?

Satan loves to use fear to guide you away from God’s true essence, that is, his perfect Love (1 John 4:8). If he can’t take you away from God by enticing you with sin then he will try to take you away from God by making you feel that what you’ve done could never be forgiven. Satan is known as the Father of lies (John 8:44), and he wants you to believe that you will never be good enough or deserving of God’s love.

What you need to remember is that you are loved by God, not because of what you’ve done, but because of who you are. The Bible tells us that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (Rom. 5:8). God loves you more than you can ever know and there is nothing that will tear you away from his love.

QUESTION 1. Have you ever done things or continue to do things that cause you to fear God’s punishment? (If so, what)
QUESTION 2. What does it mean for God to love you not because of what you’ve done but because of who you are in Christ?
CHALLENGE: If you’re in fear of God’s punishment then you are in fear of God’s perfect love. He’s not looking down on you disappointed. He’s looking down on you like you’re His child. We challenge you to know who you are in Christ and, with all the power of the Holy Spirit, overcome that fear of punishment, and really experience God’s perfect love.
