I want what I want when I want it, and I want it now!

Psalm 27:14 “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.”

Instant gratification is a funny thing, especially in the United States. The demand for instant results is seeping into every corner of our lives. Retailers are jumping into same-day delivery services. Smart phone apps eliminate the wait for a cab, a date, or a table at a hot restaurant. Movies and TV shows begin streaming in seconds. The problem with instant gratification is that we can never truly get enough. Take Cory’s story for example. He turned to instant gratification to mask his inner pain and need for love rather than turning towards God for his ultimate gratification. Many experts caution that instant gratification comes at a high price: it’s making us less patient.

1 Corinthians 13:4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

When we are impatient we are actually being unloving, telling God that we know better or that we want to take control over the outcome. Unfortunately, when we attempt to control people, places, and the things around us, what actually ends up happening is that we invite worry, anxiety, and fear right along with it. This is the exact opposite of what God has called us to be as his children! We are to “wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.”

QUESTION 1. Has there ever been a time that you felt God calling you to be more patient? (Explain)
QUESTION 2. Are there any areas of your life where you feel God calling you to turn over control and let him lead the way?
CHALLENGE: We challenge you to go to God in prayer, hand over the control of your life to him, and wait on the Lord to do things his way. In doing this you reap the greatest gratification in existence, an everlasting gratification that can only come from God.
