1 Corinthians 3:10-11

According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

I had the opportunity to serve in the beautiful country of Guatemala with a team of students for a week. While we were there, our team worked to build houses for two families in four days. Before we got there, the families prepared the land for the houses so that we could build on it. One of the families had land that was on a cliff, so they had to cut into the hill and bring in 150 large sand bags to level the ground so a house could be built on top.

When I think of the hard work the family had to do before the promise of a new home was attainable, I see an immense amount of faith. When I think of this family and then read the verse above, I see the incredible work of Jesus.

Before the promise of a restored relationship could be fulfilled, Jesus had to lay a foundation on which a relationship could be built. Instead of making a foundation of shame, guilt, and expectation of repayment, Jesus built a foundation of hope, love, and his very own life. This is the foundation for His Kingdom. Now, for those who choose to join in on God’s work, we get to build upon what God Himself has begun. We must be careful with how we live our lives, because it’s how we build His Kingdom here.

QUESTION 1. What part are you playing right now to increase the Kingdom of God around you?
QUESTION 2. What promises has God given you that you are still waiting to see fulfilled?
CHALLENGE: Spend some time asking God how he wants you to build up those around you today in the name of Jesus. Then live that out!
