PEACE

DOUG ROMINGER

John 16:33

“These things I have spoken to you, so that in me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”

Anxiety disorders affect over 40 million people in the US alone, making it the most common mental illness. Even if it isn’t something you deal with on a regular basis you still know that stomach clenching feeling. On top of anxiety we also feel pressure from peers to fit in, from parents to go into a money making career field, or even from a boyfriend or girlfriend to take your physical relationship too far. Anxiety, pressure, and stress can crush us.

There is good news, though. Even when we start to feel like the weight of it all is crushing us, Jesus can take it all away. When I say this it doesn’t mean He’ll take away the problem or issue necessarily; but it does mean He can give you peace, strength, and even joy to face that anxiety causing problem.

God knows your future and he says he will never leave you or forsake you (Deut. 31:6). He also tells us He has overcome this world. So every problem, big or small, God has already conquered. To me, this is supremely comforting. Most of the issues we face are beyond our control anyway, but they aren’t beyond God’s. Next time you start to feel the weight of life begin to press on you, stop, and give it over to God. Ask him for peace and strength while you go through it and God says it will be given to you (Matt. 7:7).

QUESTION 1. Do you get anxious or worried often? What about?
QUESTION 2. Do you give those worries to God? Or do you try to handle them on your own?
CHALLENGE: When you feel pressure, stress, or anxiety, know that God is already there. Give it to Him, rest in Him, and thank for Him for what He has already taken care of.
