Matthew 11:28-29

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

For some reason we have bought into the belief that the more we do the more worthy we become. So we take on more and more until we are completely and utterly used up. They could even be all good things like serving in your church, at your local homeless shelter, and leading Bible studies, but eventually, if you are doing them on your own strength, you will burn out.

This burnout happens when we pour out and pour out but don’t take the time to give God our burdens and rest in him. Running on your own strength may work for a time but there is always an end to our reserves. Yes, God loves when we serve him and his kingdom but he also knows we are fragile and finite and we get burdened very easily if we don’t spend time alone with him and rely on his strength.

How are you making sure you are resting in God amidst the busyness of life? Are you refilling your reservoir often or are you running empty? It is so important that you find time to spend alone with Him, whether it is talking with Him on a quiet walk in the woods or reading His word on your favorite comfy chair with your phone turned off. Maybe it is worshipping Him in your room when no one else is around. Whatever fills you up with Jesus’ comfort and strength, do it, and do it often. The more you do the more effective you will be in furthering God’s kingdom.

QUESTION 1. Are you feeling weary from taking on too much or from doing it all on your own strength?
QUESTION 2. How do you find rest in God? What are some things you can put into practice today?
CHALLENGE: In the midst of doing, being, and serving, come to God with your weary heart and he will give you rest.
