PEACE

JUSTINE KRUGER

Isaiah 43:2

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.

True peace is so hard to come by these days. Life is hitting us at a thousand miles an hour and even when we try to fall asleep our brains still keep running. Wave after wave of anxiety smacks us in the face, yet we put a smile on and say it is all okay—we got this. The rivers of stress and worry are threatening to sweep us away, but we swear we aren’t drowning.

There was a time when I resigned myself to believing that I would never feel peace again, that I could handle the stress on my own, but then God supernaturally intervened. I love the imagery of this verse in Isaiah. God is saying that even if the river is sweeping over you, even if you are walking through an inferno, he will be with you. Despite all of these external circumstances it is Him, and only Him, who can bring you true peace.

Do you want this? All you have to do is ask. When I got to a place where I thought I would never again know a mind at peace, I cried out to God for help and help he did. I remember at that exact moment feeling what I can only describe as supernatural tranquility washing over me. Yes, the troubles of the world were still there, but I had peace knowing God would handle it and faith in his promise that he would not allow the rivers to sweep me away.

If you feel like you are at the end of your rope and you can’t possibly take on the world alone anymore, then don’t. Give it to God. Cry out to Him and He will help you. His promises are true; when the fires of this world are blazing, you will not be burned.

QUESTION 1. Have you ever experienced peace that only God can bring?
QUESTION 2. Do you think you have to carry all your worries and troubles on your own? Do you believe God can handle them?
CHALLENGE: When things are really rough, hard, stressful, or worrisome, know that God will always be there with you, giving you true peace, even in the raging waters.
