Psalms 23:4

Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

You’ve just gone on a mission trip and you feel like you’re flying. You are buddy-buddy with Jesus; you believe nothing can go wrong, and you can take the entire world on with one hand tied behind your back. But a week passes and suddenly you’ve crashed back to earth. You were on top of a mountain and now you’re back in the valley, and life doesn’t seem so great down here.

Mountaintop experiences, like mission trips, church retreats, and even great spiritual discussions, are awesome, but you have to understand you can’t live on that mountain forever. At some point you have to come back down; and life gets “hard” again. But the valley is just as beautiful as the mountaintop because it’s in the valley that Jesus molds and shapes you into an even more beautiful representation of himself. Next time you go from mountain to valley, just remember that you’re there for a reason, and then embrace Jesus, the one who is walking right next to you in those hard times.

QUESTION 1. When was the last time you had that mountaintop experience? Did you crash after a while?
QUESTION 2. What did you do after you came off that huge experience? Did you wallow in self-pity? Throw God to the side? Spend all your time wishing you were back in that moment?
CHALLENGE: Find joy even in those hard valleys because they are in your life for a reason. Plus, Jesus is right there with you; what could be better than that?
