Psalm 51:8-10

Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

If you’re like most people, the thought of telling others about a sin you struggle with makes your palms sweaty and your heart race to 160 beats per minute. You can’t even fathom telling your secrets because there is just too much shame and guilt. What if they don’t want to be your friend anymore, or tell other people what you’ve done? The fear and the struggle are real, but I’m here to tell you that once you let the secret out, no matter how painful it is, you’ll experience healing and freedom like you’ve never had before.

The enemy comes only to kill, steal and destroy (John 10:10), he wants your sin to sit in darkness and he wants you to be filled with shame. You’ve got to illuminate the dark areas of your life so that the light can begin to take back the darkness. Tell someone you trust, and who is full of wisdom, about your secret sin. Jesus wants you to be free from whatever sin has a chokehold on you; you just need to let him help. God puts people in our lives who can offer wisdom and counseling, but you need to take the first step and be honest about what is really going on. I promise that once you give your sin over to God and bring it out into the open you will start to heal. It may still be a hard and painful process, but God is with you, empowering you, and so are the people you love and trust. Freedom is completely attainable; step out and take it.

QUESTION 1. What is your secret sin?
QUESTION 2. Why haven’t you sought help from others in the past? Are you scared of what they will think of you?
CHALLENGE: Reach out to those you trust and who God has put into your life and share what is really going on. It may be embarrassing and there may be consequences, but you can’t put a price on the freedom that comes from illuminating it.
