Psalm 37:25

“I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.”

I like being self-sufficient and independent. I like to prove to myself and to others that I can do things on my own. I am always trying to find ways to make sure I have more than I need so I can always have both my needs and wants covered. However, I have had to learn the hard way sometimes that trusting God does not always mean I will have everything I want or that I will be able to do everything on my own. Sometimes our wants and all the excess in our lives can get in the way of seeing how God is taking care of us.

When life is comfortable and easy, it can be difficult to see how God is providing for us. It isn’t usually until we are stretched to the end of our own ability that we see how God comes through. However, He is always providing for us, in times when we have just enough and in times when we’ve got plenty.

Trusting God does not mean that we just sit back and wait for Him to send us a check in the mail or food to eat. Sometimes He does provide for us in this way, which is awesome, but sometimes He provides by giving us opportunities to work or ask others for support. Trust is not an excuse for laziness, it is a tool to fight against self-sufficiency. We cannot live a life bigger than ourselves all on our own! In whatever we do, we trust that God will give us what we need – money, food, breath, physical health, strength, self-control, and the list goes on and on. When He provides, we need to be faithful with all that He gives us and thankful for how He has been faithful to us always.

QUESTION 1. What are you trusting that God will provide in your life right now?
QUESTION 2. How have you seen God provide for you in the past? Have you thanked Him for those times?
CHALLENGE: Trust is strengthened through thankfulness. Spend some time thanking God for all He has provided for you. Need help? Think about this: What if you woke up tomorrow with only what you thanked God for today. What would you have? Thank Him for those things He has given you!
