TRUST

JOSHUA HUMPHRIES

Jeremiah 17:7-8

Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord and whose trust is the Lord. For he will be like a tree planted by the water, that extends its roots by a stream and will not fear when the heat comes; but its leaves will be green, and it will not be anxious in a year of drought nor cease to yield fruit.

Life can be a rollercoaster. One day you are on a huge spiritual high where nothing fazes you, exuding God’s love and experiencing him. Then the next day comes and the high is gone. You feel uneasy and far from God; you may even wonder if there is a God. These rollercoaster emotions used to happen to me all the time, but I realized it was because I wasn’t deeply rooted in God.

I love the imagery that Jeremiah uses in the above verses about tree roots. If a tree is not deeply rooted, when the dry, hot season hits it will wither up and die. If its roots are deep then there will be plenty of water reserved to help it survive the dry period. The same is true for us. If we don’t deeply root ourselves in the word of God and his truth then when periods of spiritual drought hit us our soul will wither up just like the trees. But if we are rooted deeply in Him we will continue to produce life-giving fruit even when everything and everyone else is dying around us.

If you want to have deep spiritual roots unaffected by the highs and lows of life then you need to be sure you are reading the Bible daily. Even on the days you don’t feel like it, continue to saturate yourself in it. The truth God reveals about you and himself in it will be paramount when you hit those dry periods. Memorize some of your favorite verses so you can repeat them when you start to feel a spiritual low coming on. Also, make sure you are talking with Him every day; the key to a close personal relationship is communication. Trust in God and his promises and your roots will never wither and die.

QUESTION 1. Do you think you are deeply rooted? Do you find yourself always riding an emotional, spiritual rollercoaster?
QUESTION 2. What are some ways you are attempting to root yourself deeper in God’s truth?
CHALLENGE: Make sure you are deeply rooted in God so when the hard times come you will be sustained by him, unaffected by the highs and lows of life.
